I read that transit visa would not work in UK. Would a visit/travel visa work? Also, would I require to collect luggage at the UK airport and then recheck it back in when I return to the airport?

You will enter Ireland via Belfast and come back out of Ireland via belfast. ( it is a short holiday trip for 3-4 days)
