Question by Squats: Ebay buyer opened a dispute with me and is claiming my item is defective – what do I do?
I had a Satellite receiver that I sold on Ebay for a few hundred dollars. The receiver works great, as I had been using it for almost a year before moving over to cable. However, now the buyer says that the “tuner” in it is defective. The tuner itself cannot be damaged in shipping.
My guess is that the buyer simply changed his mind on the purchase, or he simply does not know how to setup the receiver himself.

Unfortunately, eBay is heavily biased towards buyers these days. You best bet is to offer a refund & have the buyer ship the receiver back to you.
You should be able to recover your final value fee (but not the listing fee). I’d try relisting it on Bonanzle or craigslist.

The way a dispute is set up closely resembles a forum thread. The plaintiff sets their case up, eBay customer service oversees it, and then you give your side of the case, all in a column of posts. Just explain that you are more than certain the item wasn’t defective when you shipped it. The buyer will have a hard time disproving this.
If the item truly arrive damaged, and the buyer did not purchase insurance on the shipping order, tell him he is out of luck and it is not your liability.
