Why aren’t American auto makers making compressed air cars? Can I buy one to drive here in California?

Question by angieashley: Why aren’t American auto makers making compressed air cars? Can I buy one to drive here in California?
I think it’s the best idea since the wheel invention! I’m sure with some safety improvements it could easily become a best seller! Why aren’t americans running with it?

the one big answer to that is because they wont make money off of it. once people buy one very few parts would ever wear out so the need for repairs would be almost never. also, think of all the things that run off your engine…a/c, water pump, alternator, etc….it would take one big ass tank to be able to run all of that and still be efficient enough to go for a week without filling it back up. i could see motorcycles and or scooters being to first to start that off but as for right now its a no go. yes they do have them but not mass produced. another ex. to look at, ford’s rotary engine that was built even before 1950 (later bought by mazda and used in the rx-7′s) the only reason ford didn’t continue that was since it only had 3 moving parts for the dang thing who was gonna make money off of it even after it was sold. just my 2 cents
