Well, there’s the hideously ugly yet extremely popular Koda Kumi as probably the top singer right now.
As for actresses with staying power, maybe Ueto Aya, Nagasawa Masami and Nakam Yukie, though those change by the month.

I agree with Nekohakase. Those are the names I hear most often recently, along with Nakatani Miki and say, Erika Sawajiri (who was a big fuss for behaving badly at the press conference). They really do change once a month, though.
