Question by Sean D: Safe time to travel to Egypt to see the Pyramids?
Is it safe for Americans? My dream is to see the Pyramids of Egypt up close. To be honest I just want to go from the airport to the pyramids, and then once I’m done seeing them, I’ll get the hell out of there. What do you think?

All travel carries risk. People die while traveling in the US, people die on “safe” Caribbean cruises, people can get injuried or have trouble anywhere they go. However, with that said – I would go back to Egypt again in a heartbeat if I had more money. The people are generally very friendly and hospitable. The ancient sites are unbelievable… But I don’t suggest going there just to see the pyramids in Giza (right outside of Cairo). There is SO much more to see. I highly recommend taking a Nile River cruise. I think it’s the best way to see the sites of Egypt – without a doubt. Do it!

I think you are a mad person. Do you think after your flight you’ll be able to go and visit them! Your flight will be min 12 hours, half a day.
Just be patient, take the rest of the day off, as there is differences in time, night there while day time in here. And you’ll like the pyramids as most people out there think it’s not that huge. There are other places you can visit, like the Egyptian museum, citadel, El Husin area, very old churches and mosques. I promise you that even one week you’ll spend, you’ll ask for more. Good luck.

Sorry what get out? Why would you want to get out of there? Egypt is perfectly safe. Loads of Americans live all over Egypt along with the British and other Europeans. Egypt is safer than some parts of America. Cairo is nice why don’t you look round Cairo and see the Nile run through Cairo the Egyptian people are really friendly and welcoming and helpful.
There has been a lot of questions asking about traveling to Egypt is it safe? Will i be OK? Peoples perception is totally wrong to what Egypt is really like. I’m getting bored now if it wasn’t safe then why do sooooooooooo many people visit Egypt and keep returning and even make it their home because they feel safe and love the country.
Don’t worry you will be fine but i think it is a pity that you will just be seeing the Pyramids and then getting the hell out of there. Really think this is a sad attitude to have.

Why are you so concerned about coming to Egypt?
The fear factor thing is so overrated.There are literally thousands of Americans coming to Egypt for vacations every day of the year and many have come back several times.
There is absolutely no reason for you to be concerned about being American and coming to Egypt for a holiday that is interesting, as in seeing as many of the ancient sites as possible, having a relaxing break and enjoy a bit of clubbing at night,if that is your thing.
I am Australian and although I now live in Egypt I spent a few years coming backwards and forwards from Australia as a travel guide.
Never once have I felt the least bit threatened here or found myself in a situation where I felt at risk. I have never seen the tourist police being required to do anything other that giving someone directions or attempting to start a broken down taxi that is blocking the traffic.
Honestly ,I feel safer here living in Luxor than I ever did living in Melbourne especially when it comes to going somewhere by myself at night.
In Melbourne there is always the increasing risk of getting carjacked,robbed or attacked or worse by street gangs and there is the added risk of a terrorist attack there too. But at least here you don’t have to be concerned about the street gang problem as they just don’t exist in Egypt.
Many countries has seen incidents of terrorism in the past few years,it has become an unfortunate but very real fact of life. But if we let it change our lives and effect the way we take holidays and travel, then they have achieved their goal.
There is no other country that I have been to that has such tight security and police presence as Egypt,this is because there have been a couple of isolated incidents.
But when you consider that there are over 5million tourists who visit Luxor alone every year and you could probably triple the number that come to Cairo and see the pyramids with no incidents, then Egypt is actually a pretty safe place to visit.
So don’t fall into the very over rated fear trap.Come ,relax and enjoy your time in Egypt to the max’, you will most likely have such a good time that you will be planning your next trip on the plane going home, as many do!

In a word, in Cairo, you can walk after midnight in the poorest neighborhood, and feel completely safe. In a city of 20 million, life starts after 8pm.
