Question by fartjuice: Military auto sales tax in MA and RI?
I know when I buy a car in CT my sales tax is 4.5% for Active Duty. In SC it’s 0%. Does anyone know what it is in MA or RI? We live close to both, so if it’s less than 4.5% we may take a drive to buy a new car!

Thanks!
If it doesn’t matter, then how come when I bought a car in SC and still registered it in CT, I payed the SC rate of 0%?

Actually, it doesn’t make any difference… you pay tax based on the state and county you will register the vehicle in, not where you buy it. Dealers will look up whatever it is and charge tax accordingly, usually from the address on your driver’s license.

Additional detals… if you payed the 0%, someone screwed up, as rest assured your home county and state want to collect that tax. You may have gotten away with something, and once the dealership figured it out, the decided you were too far away and just ate it, as it was their mistake.
