What type of music defined the 80s?

Question by R: What type of music defined the 80s?
Did rock define the 80s… Groups like Journey and Aerosmith and them, or did Pop define music in the 80s?
I know madonna was huge, but whenever I go to 80s night bar parties I feel like it’s usually rock.

I guess it’s just what genre you listened to. For me it was rock but yes, Madonna was just starting out and there were a lot of bands that were under the genre of ‘new wave’ like flock of seagulls, etc…
Personally, I was into Journey, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Scorpions, etc…and it’s funny because I was just listening to some old 80′s bands and taking a trip down memory lane – laughing at the BIG hair, Ritchie Sambora’s black cowboy hat, the tight spandex pants, the ripped t-shirts. WoW if you missed the 80′s you really missed it.
ohhhh and now they’re “oldies” Ya now, I have to say even though I was into rock, whenever I hear any genre of song from the 80′s it just takes me back. I wonder, does anyone else like all genres of music from when they were teens even when they weren’t into that music at the time cuz it was lame?

I think rock and hair metal definitely defined the 80′s.
And they still define my world now. (:

The cool thing about the 80s is it had it all… hair bands, icons (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince), New Wave/Punk and the beginnings of Hip Hop. In the mainstream, it was mainly rock and icons that dominated (Genesis, Journey, Springsteen, etc). But there was a lot of underground college rock (Pixies, the Smiths, Cure, Adam Ant etc) that was a completely unique and different sound.
So an 80s party can have any of these. This is subjective, but I personally think New Wave and Hip Hop defined the 80s – and that all boils down to the new synthesizer. It’s not-so-modern anymore but at the time that 80s synth sound was revolutionary and is immediately identified with the 80s. Pop on “Tainted Love” or Gary Numan’s “Cars” and you’ll know what I mean. But this was definitely less mainstream popular and more what you had to be introduced to by an older brother home from college (no iTunes! or Pitchfork) MTV’s first year on air was defined by this music (Madness, Men at Work, Cyndi Lauper, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Duran Duran etc)
One last thing… a lot of 80s rock WAS pop music. The Smiths, Journey, Genesis… all about making catchy riffs and hooks. Don’t Stop Believing? Pure pop. There wasn’t as much of the crazy drum solos and epic 12-minute rock songs of the 70s and 60s. Hope that helps.
