Jimmy Hendricks -1967
From his Bio:
Hendrix often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback. Hendrix was one of the musicians who popularized the wah-wah and distortion pedals.

can’t really say who it was that first used distortion, but i know the idea of distorting the guitar’s tone originated from people turning their amps up too loud
about 1 year ago
It goes back to the 1950′s
several blues players and early rockers claim the title.
All of them discovered it by accident,
either by using an amp with a bad tube, or a torn speaker.
Gibson made a small brown distortion box in the early ’60′s
Long before Jimi or Led Zep.

Jimi Hendrix…..The Jimi Hendix Experience

Jimi Hendricks wasn’t the first.
I forget the guy’s name, but he was on his way to a guitar get-together with his friends, and he dropped his amp on the road. He picked it back up and plugged everything in like its supposed to be, and he played his guitar, and distortion was born. He was an African American, but it was not Jimi Hendricks.
***Correction.
It was Ike Turner in 1951. He screwed his amp up while on his way to a Blues-Jam with some friends. He plugged his guitar in, and distortion came out of the speakers instead of a regular guitar sound. It was invented by accident.
