Q&A: Why aren’t bollywood movies very popular outside india but are very popular in india?
Question by green: Why aren’t bollywood movies very popular outside india but are very popular in india?
I’ve never seen any Bollywood movie. Do you think they are not popular here because people are prejudging against indians? Or do you think they are just bad (why would indians watch them then)?

What century do you live in? Bollywood movies are everywhere these days. Moreover I’ve spoken with people from Romania, Russia, China and many other countries where Bollywood is loved.
Sure some films are poorly done but this can also be said for Hollywood.
What do you think? Answer below!

THERE IS A MARKET FOR GERMAN FILMS ONLY IN GERMANY AND IN PLACES WHERE THERE IS A MAJORITY GERMAN POPULATION LIVING (LIKE JOINVILLE IN BRAZIL ETC)…OTHER THAN FILM FESTIVALS OFFCOURSE…

In the past they all had very similar stories. Nice couple, bad guys kidnap wife, husbands fights them all off and saves her (a bit of a generalsation). They used to be and some sill are poor qualit and have poor acting.
They are a lot better now and films such as Musafir and No entry could make it overseas with a litle more effort, but there are still terrible movies such as chocolate. That said, the showing of movies in the West (US and Europe) is mnonopolised by the big studios, and movie theatres, and they want to show the stupidly expensive US movies. If Indian movies where released more frequently Hollywood would lose money, so they (I believe) try to prevent it.
On your last point, Indians watched them because they had no orlittle choice, they still watch them in their millions because they are affordable.
Hope that is of use.

Why would a billion Indians watch them if they were bad? Bollywood movies are fantastic, but many Westerners don’t like them because they don’t understand them. Bollywood film conventions and storytelling techniques are very different than Hollywood’s. Not better or worse, just different. However, many Westerners are starting to catch on to the magic of Bollywood and it’s becoming increasingly popular in the West.
