Question by HD William: Why doesn’t Harley Davidson make cars?
Seems logical, doesn’t it? Honda started out as a motorcycle company and made a very successful transition into the auto market. Even suzuki makes cars. You’d think a huge company like Harley could easily transition into the market. I think a Harley car with loud pipes would sell like hot cakes. I mean, who doesn’t like Harleys?

If Harley-Davidson made cars, they would cost twice as much as the competitors’ cars, and wouldn’t pass noise regulations. Nobody would sell ‘em, and if they did, few could afford to buy ‘em.

Harley Davidson used to make Golf Carts and Snowmobiles. Neither were successful, and they quit. Can you imagine the slams that would result? It’s bad enough the narrow minded wannabes put down the bikes they would give themselves headaches making up stuff about Harley cars.

I’ve heard that most major car companies including Honda, Toyota, Chevy and Chrysler pay Harley Davidson $10 million a year each for every year that they don’t make cars and trucks. They all know that Harley would crush them and dominate the car and truck world like Harley dominates the motorcycle world. No other bike on the road even comes close to the power, performance and noise of the mighty Harley V Twin. The Ford Harley Davidson truck is cool, but has nowhere near the class dominating power performance and sound that an actual truck made by in America by Harley Davidson would have.

Harleys-Davidsons are Motorcycles that have a soul these jap companies have no soul meaning once a their pot metal goes south,car or bike (overheats cracks a head etc ) any mechanical problem you have a worthless pile of crap that you can trash because a new one is cheaper than repairs on the other, the Harley in 100 pieces that has sat in the shad tree for 35 years at min is worth 6 grand which what the average rice burner is worth two years old after the 4.5 grand loss you take when your credit goes through

Because they are a Motorcycle company… I dont like harleys… You gottatighten every screw on them after every ride. They are heavy and slow and cost WAAAAAAAAYYYY too much. They are now only bought by wanna be bikers. Be a true biker, ride a Triumph or an Indian

Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha are all Japanese industrial giants, they make many other products besides motorcycles and cars. Just because they do it is no reason for HD to do it.

Harley considered the idea, but they were going to import about 50% of the parts from foreign countries, just like they do with their bikes. Turns out china was already sending Harley so many “quality” made parts already that they didn’t have enough resources in the country for Harley to make cars with.

Since 1903 the Hog has been an American ICON !! Why would a co. like HD want to produce cars like the Jap Crap cos do ????????? I tend to disagree on the “hotcakes” theory. I’ve been on Indians and HDS for over40 yrs. Ruin the MYSTIQUE? NEVER !!! If it has to be explained you do not need to know !!!!!!!!!!!!!

80% of the market for motorcycles doesn’t like harley’s or at least favors a japanese brand. Because 80% of all motorcycles sold are japanese whith Honda having the largest overall owner base. And well… look at the current situation with with american cars vs. japanese cars. People don’t like american cars either and I highly doubt harley could change that with their already dubious reputation for overall quality.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler cannot sell cars to Americans, what makes you think HD could?
On the other hand, maybe that would work…
BTW: Harley sells more bikes every year than Honda does, and that includes their dirtbikes.

Because when they were bought by AMF: 1967-1981, Harley tried to get into manufacturing everything & nearly lost the entire company down the toilet. Thankfully AMF was kicked to the curb by Harley consumers & quality control came back to what HD should stick to: making reliable motorcycles without parts that break down or leak everywhere. They made a deal with Ford to put they HD name on the Ford F-150 (and ANYONE else who would buy their trademark; you can get ‘Harley” anything now).

Well Harley only knows how to make one engine. Maybe if they put that engine in one of those cool Mexican golf carts and all those dorks buying trikes could have a little Harley car instead….might work. Harley’s aging customer base might make this a necessity. I predict it is gonna happen.
Imagine 80 year olds in their black Harley brand get-ups lumbering around in loud Harley mini-coopers that leak oil and vibrate like the dickens. Imagine when the biker broad gets out…the blue saggy tattoos, the black Harley walker, black Harley thong and black Harley bikini top. And the old dude in black leather chaps and coke bottle glasses with Harley frames.

Why? They thought about it, of course, and decided they should first try to build a descent motorcycle. Has not happened yet. Like Honda, when they are able to master the motorcycle, they may well move on to cars.

Harley has outsourced some of their production to China. I have seen a new 250cc with the Harley name on it many times here in Vietnam, imported from China, and by all reports it is a piece of junk. Too bad for all you purists and the ‘made in America’ myth.
