why are harley davidson motorcycles so annoying?

Question by thebrowncowcool: why are harley davidson motorcycles so annoying?
You can’t have a decent conversation without being rudely interupted by that loud annoying noise of that stupid motor. Why is that if a car has a hole in the muffler and it gets pulled over and ticketed for being loud, but a harley’s motor is louder than s*** and that is ok?

Because someone somewhere decided that loud motorbikes are cool.
I’m fairly sure that this person is now on the FBI’s most wanted list.

Harleys don’t come from the factory loud, but people modify their exhaust systems just like people do who have hot rods. Sorry it annoys you. Wear ear plugs. I love the sound of a Harley.

Harleys are built to be loud which make it legal. It is annoying, I agree. If cars can’t be loud then motorcycles shouldn’t be either

Its like hearing the workman drilling in the street. I hate motorbikes that makes noise. I hope my son never buys one.

Yeah good point there. We should complain to the proper authorities about that.

Yes, it is loud, but the sound is also trademarked, so don’t mess with it.

Annoying …that is music to my ears…anything you have to say is not nearly important enough that it can’t wait. That is the way they are designed, and they are within the limits the law allows.

for the most part harley’s are not loud,, not untill you buy new pipes and get ride of the stock one’s that comes with the bike,,, and most people who ride them,,modify them so when they do go for ride,, other cars can hear them comming,,,,

Well sometimes one mans music is another’s loud muffler…I cant stand loud bass….the dr says that there are some people who are like that about lower ranges of music…it causes great discomfort and great distress…yet I am exposed to this in public all the time…if I ask that someone turn down their music do you think I am treated with anything other than disdain….

Harley Davidson motorcycles so annoying because of that loud annoying noise like a whale with emphysema whereas my EBike is like a butterfly floating past them
about 1 year ago
You got to be kidding, right. with all that rap crap booming out of kids cars nowadays, and you are complaining about a motorcycle. Get real. A Harley has a good sound, it’s the sound of a mans motorcycle, and it sounds good. Just turn up your boom boom rollin music box and drive on. myself, I turn mine down and roll down the window to listen. It’s purty music to me.

Ok I did have a Harley and right from the factory it was too loud. But these people who ride them take the factory pipes off and go with straight pipes and ride with a mean look because they think they are imitating bad guys and they are. Then they say they won’t ride quiet because old people on the road can’t see them or hear them. Bull crap. the idea is watch out for the other guy. Ride responsibly like your life depends on it. It’s transportation not attitude. I ride another brand now and it’s nice and quiet and I love it that way. I don’t want any attention. You’re right those Harley’s are way too loud. And the reason they don’t get stopped is because the cops are riding Harleys too and they are also loud.
I don’t ride a motorcycle, but I think (this is just for me) that the noise makes them somewhat more ‘visible’ and, having had the bad experience of almost taking a left turn in front of one, (which would have almost certainly killed or badly wounded the rider) I feel the noise is a type of asset to their being able to ride in safety amid drivers who (like myself) ‘didn’t SEE the motorcycle’… but then again, if I lived in close proximity to the constant booming, I might change my tune on that one… Good question, thanks!

It’s kind of a poseur’s bike, really. They are really substandard bikes for what you pay—if you doubt it, just watch the rear view mirrors on one when it’s idling at a stoplight. You think that vibration speaks to high tech and quality?
The Harley slogan is: “If it sticks out, chrome it, and if it breaks, make it heavier”.
I’m amazed anyone pays those prices for them. They are very mediocre machines. The noise makes up for the lack of everything else I guess.
Some years ago we had some obnoxious guy with a small penis problem who would wake up the neighborhood every night at 2 AM. We finally shoved a potato up each exhaust pipe with a broom handle, and we didn’t hear that bike for months til he figured out what happened.
Well there are lots of loud cars out there as well.
Harley’s are a big part of “Western Culture” thanks to movies like Easy Rider… a symbol of freedom to many, so i guess when a loud Harley comes along we except the noise as an expression of freedom, we love freedom right?
Also it’s a “to each his own” bike. some love’em other hate them.

I was in Yellowstone earlier this year, out hiking miles from the highway. Totally quiet, you couldn’t hear a car or a bus or a semi truck. But those F-ing Harleys were loud and clear.
It isn’t that Harleys are so annoying. It’s that Harley guy is such a poser and a dweeb.
Back when I started riding, Harley guy was a scary biker. He lived to ride. Everyone and his brother had a Japanese 4cylinder and the Harley was bad-ass and cool. Now the Harley is the McMotorcycle and everyone’s grey haired uncle has one for his first bike. The cool is gone. Now it is all about noobs acting what they think is the role of a rebel biker.

Loud pipes save lives.
I have to agree with you here.
Sometimes late at night or early in the morning I am awakened by some poser tearing up the street with his obnoxiously loud exhaust. Most of the time it is some tard wearing a bandana with a skull face on it trying to look intimidating. Wringing out the engine, especially in or near neighborhoods is down right rude & to this day I don’t know why they do it aside from trying to be some poser rebel.
The worst part about this is that Harley’s sound like absolute crap. Idling at the light with the …potato potato potato sound and then throttle full cobb from light to light. I don’t get it.

Some states are starting to enforce the excessive noise of aftermarket exhaust systems.
It’s only a matter of time until all states enforce this law.
One state has the ordinance on the books, waiting to be voted into law.
No bike will pass inspection without stock exhaust, decibel level not stamped on an aftermarket exhaust, or modified exhaust.
Police will be required to carry noise level detcion devices (as they do with speed checkers).
And have the athourity to impound the bike if it doesn’t pass.
So for you “loud pipes save lives” guys, keep the noise level down in residental areas, before to many people complain to their government elected officials.

The difference between a car with a hole in the muffler and straight pipes is that to pass a safety inspection in Missouri, the vehicle must have an intact exhaust system without leaks and. Straight pipes meet that criteria and holy mufflers, whether on cars or bikes don’t. Also keep in mind that not all of those loud bikes are Harleys. The Jap V twins look and sound a lot like a true Harley. As far as sound levels go, a bike is run past a sound meter at a certain speed and the noise level measured. Not just the exhaust, but everything. The louder the engine, transmission and drive chain is, the quieter the factory has to make the exhaust and vice versa. True, I don’t like loud pipes either but there’s plenty of other guilty parties out there, especially kids playing rap on their stereos. I don’t like to be setting at a stop light and be unable to hear my radio because of the noise (I don’t consider it music) coming from a vehicle several cars away.

But the bass coming out of your cage is ok?
The buzz of a zipper car is less annoying somehow?
The twice-pipes on a truck doesn’t make any noise?
You’re being pretty selective in your annoyance. Just because you can’t afford to maintain your hunk of crap cage doesn’t give you the right to dis everyone else. Get a job and fix the hole in your muffler, then you won’t get pulled over any more. I’m sure the bass booming out of your windows doesn’t call any attention to you at all.
Before you decide everyone else is a problem, try examining why you are having the problem that you have.
BTW: If you knew anything about the bikes, you’d know that they aren’t sold new that way, they are modified by the owner, so your issue is with the individual owners of them.
Get a grip.

Every vehicle should be checked by a lazer noise meter, if they are too lould then a lazer beam should disintigrate them. This goes for music, dogs barking, kids yelling etc. This should also help cut down on some annoying traffic back-up.

#1, They are slow.
#2, You hear them longer because of #1
#3, Look at me…I’m on a HD…..WOW….boring….
#4, Most just bolt on the offensive pipes and never tune the engine to the new exhaust, See #1 and #2.

The same reason it’s patented yet sooooo many try & copy it & they are the ones that truly sound like crap. Harley’s are legendary, so is the sound so get over it & find something truly worthwhile to cry about.

It’s not the motorcycle, Dear…it’s the owners that modify the exhaust that make it annoying. Children!!

because doctors and buisnessmen, and all the other no thrills job workers who went to college are realizing that they arent bad-ass so in the quest to be bad-ass rather than buying an old hardtail rollin chassy and an evo engine and assymbling it yourself and makeing a unique chopper( thats badass) they go out and drop 30-grand on a piece of shit harley that is all chromed out so they can be a biker, they get all kinds of leathers with hells angels or bikers for jesus or some other gay shit on the back, then they have to get a half faces flat black helmet and some goggles, yet they dont know jack shit about rideing so they get ABS brakes and shit. and then they wanna be badass so they go out and buy these huge 2” dragpipes to compensate for thier small dicks and ride around revving thier engines like asshole. when really they are the joke of the bikeing world and are posers who dont have real “choppers” just slow pieces of shit tourers that they ride around cause they dont wanna be caught on a goldwing.
harley’s blow exept the v-rod and nightrod special, and the buells, cause they are the only harleys that have some decent performance.
real “bikers” ride victory choppers. or streetbikes, but i have to admit, the sound of a v-twin with 2” drag pipes is nice.

Harley Davidson motorcycles meet the same noise emission requirements as any other brand. They have to by law.
Harley Davidson had a reputation for making quiet motorcycles (ie: the Silent Gray Fellow), no other company can say that.
The next time you hear a loud motorcycle, look at the badge on the tank. If you can find one. A Harley does not hide it’s name. All the other brands……owner’s preference, I guess.
