Question by Jesus Christ: How can anyone listen to Heavy Metal music?
It is sad how many kids my age (late teens) listen to garbage like Slipknot, as I lay dying, cannibal corpse, etc. What happened to music sounding pleasing to the ear? What happened to music being soulful? What happened to well written songs? Metal bands have no respect for music. I also have yet to meet an intelligent person who likes this type of music. In fact, every “Metal Head” I know is some ignorant, homophobic idiot working some dead end job. Real music- Beethoven, Elvis, The Strokes. What do you meatheads have to say?

Um, it’s all a matter of opinion. I’m sure you wouldn’t like someone to bash your “real music.” Although I’m not a huge metalhead myself, that’s just ignorant.

i cant stand the metal bands you listed and i wouldnt in a million years call myself a metal head but there is alot of good metal out there: Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Meatllica, and Slayer to name a few. Ive met plenty of metal heads who are smart because all the metal heads in my school are the more dorky band geek kids, but i dont really give 2 shits what they listen to.

Have you ever considered many of these people listen to it to get there anger out, and u say your in your late teens, how can you insult the other teens for there jobs, you do realize that when your a teenager the job you get isn’t meant to last forever, or be a career, so get over yourself and realize that not everyone is gonna like the same stuff as you.
PS: I can’t stand all the bands you said they listened to either, but I don’t act all stuck up about it. Rachmaninoff, Muse, Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater ftw!

Not all metal is the same and neither are all of its fans. I like to listen to other things like metal especially when it comes down to genres like Blues, Folk, Jazz, and Classical. Oh, I have plenty to say “Jesus Christ”. I am 16 and I LOVE Slipknot! Slipknot sounds pleasant to my ears just as much as your (or what you like to think is) music does. I am very Intelligent for my age and think what you just said makes you sound more ignorant than the people you are describing. How can you be a real honest to “god” Christan (or whatever you are) if you judge people or respects others different than you! And the real ignorant one is you because any one with an ounce of logic doesn’t in myths like ”Jesus” or ”God”? I have already got letters from universities that want me to attend their college programs. Do I sound stupid to you? I won’t be working a dead end job! I can’t say the same for you and all your hypocritical ways. I just hope when you are older that you will have more common Sense than to open your mouth about such ridiculous things and judge because that’s not the “Christan” thing to do. You are being ignorant. Just because someone likes something different than you doesn’t mean you can attack them. Also, I love metal and i have an iq 140. Seriously. Metal is pleasing to my ears. Metal also shows the truth about life. Life isn’t always fun. Metal is like the modern day blues.
Metal also uses the best of the best. Lets stack up a metal guitarist, bassist, or drummer against any other genre. Metal has the fastest, most technical guitars, fast as heck bassists, and the most outrageous drums.
Also, I get Beethoven and Elvis, but the Strokes are just terrible.

All music is real music, unless of course someone is having some hallucinations but that’s a completely different story.
People are allowed to like whatever music they want to like. And a person’s intelligence is in no way determined by the type of music they like. Metal bands have just as much respect for music as any other band. Most of the so-called “metal heads” that I’ve met are more than tolerant about not only others tastes in music but also what some of those people think about the Metal genre. If anyone is being ignorant here…
And no, I’m not a Metal Head. I’m just tired of people bitching about other people liking different music and if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times; no one is forcing you to listen to it. End of story.

Why don’t you educate yourself about the music before stereotyping the entire genre and its listeners?
Since when does music have to please the ear? Music is an expression of emotion, and if the emotion expressed is not one of pleasure (and there are plenty of things in this world not to be pleased about), then the music should not be ‘pleasing’. There are classical pieces that were so displeasing to the ear that they caused riots when they were first performed.
My high school is historically one of the top-ranked high schools in the state of California, and out of all the people I knew there, the smartest person I knew (and still the smartest person I know now), not only in terms of “school smarts”, but also in terms of cognitive ability and worldly understanding, listens predominantly to grindcore and death metal.

Im not a fan of metal either.. My favorite music is rock-jass-reggae like Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz, and John Mayer. I still like a few harcore songs like rage agaisnt the machine. It is not totally yelling but they have one of the best guitarists if you wathed him play with Bruce Springsteen at the Music Hall of fame. Linkin Park is also good.

I am a metalhead, I enjoy metal because of the emotion and creativity put into every song.
btw, Slipknot and As I Lay Dying aren’t metal bands. they’re metalcore bands. There are some Metal bands that never scream and never have distorted guitars. There are also bands that use flutes and orchestra’s. Don’t stereotype the whole genre.

OK first of all slipknot,Cannibal Corpse and As I Lay Dying are three different types of metal not heavy
if you anything about metal you would know that one of the biggest influences was Beethoven, Wanger and other classical composer not to mention Elvis and other early rock ‘n’ roll artist
and if you really took the time to listen to the lyrics they are way better then “you aint nothin but a hound dog”
As for all metal heads being idiots Not only did i graduate from high school with Straight A’s but with a presidential award and am now working on a degree in business

Well i’m a keen Metal Head but I wouldn’t listen to that stuff (Slipknot etc..), also Metal is the most diverse music in the world, have you ever heard Progressive Metal if not it is very soulful/soft and very technical.
Also how can you judge someone as homophobic when you have five times as much prejudice by judging us as homophobic

While I agree that the bands you listed aren’t all that great, I beg to differ on the rest. There are some metal bands who write wonderful songs, think about Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and older bands like that as well as some newer ones such as Rammstein and Apocalyptica. As for the no respect part, metal bands have a tremendous amount of respect for music as they are usually influenced by a wide range of styles. Finally the “metalhead” part, while it may seem true, is actually very inaccurate. I’m a classically trained musician, a college student on a full ride scholarship and a HUGE metal fan. Although, I think it’s good that you brought up the stereotype as it needs to be rethought.

Second, you would actually be surprised how many straight a and straight edge kids listen to metal. There were quiet girls who stayed in a library most of the time at my highschool, would I ever have guessed any them Slayer and Kreator fans? No,
Also, metal bands like Priest, Maiden, and Sabbath were huge influences for mainstream rock.
And, Metal is diverse, don’t take one band like Cannibal and Slipknot and use them to cover the whole thing. You have Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Hair Metal, Hardcore, Death Metal, Black Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Nu Metal, New American Metal, Metalcore, Deathcore and so on.

Those bands you listed are not heavy metal. They are Punk Metalcore/Nu Metal (slipknot), Death Metal/Deathcore (cannibal corpse).
